Let Us Review The Breguet Type XXI 3817 Chronograph Men's Watch

Not everyone knows that the great-great-grandson of Abraham-Louis Breguet, Louis Charles Breguet, Louis Charles Bréguet (1880-1955) was one of the early aviation pioneers first designing the gyroplane (the forerunner of the helicopter) in 1905 and his first fixed-wing aircraft, the Breguet Type I, in 1909.

He then developed other models such as the Swiss Breguet 19, and later the Breguet Deux-Ponts (Double Deck). In 1919, he founded the Compagnie des messageries aériennes, which evolved into Air France.

In the following years also the Breguet watch company started developing chronograph mechanisms fitted on cockpit instrument panels and began producing pilot’s watches.

The first wrist chronographs was developed in 1935 and about two decades later, Breguet launched production of the Type XX model commissioned by the French armed forces.

At Baselworld 2016, Breguet expanded the collection with a new model, the Breguet Type XXI 3817 chronograph Watch, whose vintage look reflects the history and origins of the Type XX line.

On the other hand, the Type XXI 3817 takes advantage of the most advanced technical solutions: the Calibre 584Q/2 self-winding chronograph movement with flyback function incorporates an inverted in-line Swiss lever escapement with silicon pallets as well as a silicon balance-spring.

Silicon is impervious to magnetic attraction as well as highly resistant to corrosion and wear. Lighter and harder than steel, it reduces inertia and requires no lubricant. Moreover, the production method for silicon components makes it possible to create extremely complex shapes while ensuring extreme precision.

Visible through the sapphire crystal caseback, the movement beats at 28,800 vibrations per hour and offers 48 hours of power reserve.

The retro-style slate grey dial is framed by a 42 mm stainless steel case with a bidirectional rotating bezel and, of course, the signature fluted caseband. Thanks to its screw-locked crown, the watch is water-resistant to 100 metres / 330 feet.
